I recently bought a number of new, higher quality wigs that advertised they could be washed, and styled because I wear them just about every day.
When this wig arrived, I was extremely disappointed because the front third of the wig completely lacked any wave or curl. It just fell flat, lifeless, and straight down. It tried HairUWear leave in conditioner to see if I could encourage it back to life. Nothing worked.
Following the instructions, I washed the wig and let it dry for a couple of days. However, washing did nothing to resolve the complete lack life on the front third. As I said, the reason I decided to purchase higher quality wigs was because they are supposed to withstand proper washing, and they can be styled. The instructions with this wig said it could be curled with an iron set to no more than 350°F.
I placed the wig on a weighted wig stand and pinned it so it couldn’t move. Using a tourmaline ceramic curling iron, at 310°F, I curled the front areas of the wig that were completely flat. VERY IMPORTANT… Unlike real hair, synthetic hair will not hold a curl unless the curl is clipped in place until the hair cools. It took me about 30 minutes of very careful work. When I removed the clips holding the curls, I first used my fingers and then a wig comb, finished with leave in conditioner, and the wig looked great.
I went to a large party the next night. Very few people knew me. I received countless comments on how great my hair looked, along with the usual how or who did your hair questions. Not a single person that didn’t know me had a clue it was a wig! When I told a few women it was a wig, the look in their eyes confirmed their astonishment! And people who knew me, not only commented on how awesome my hair looked, but how real it looked because the roots appeared to be growing from my scalp.
I realize I could have returned the wig for a replacement, but the problem gave me a chance to see if it could be styled as advertised. This is my 2nd Raquel Welch brand wig. I’m very pleased with both, and would recommend Raquel Welch brand wigs with confidence.
I also purchased an Ellen Wille, Girl Mono wig from the Wig Outlet. It looks spectacular! But, until I have the chance to wear it enough, wash it, and see how it holds up, my review will have to wait…
